About this vintage design furniture

Vintage, Art deco, Set of 2 greyhound bookends made in France circa 40's 50's. The pieces are in bronze patinated metal called "Spelter". CAST IRON ART DECO In the past, spelter was often neglected by art dealers in favor of bronze. However, spelter pieces, dating from the early twentieth century to the present day, are now highly sought after. The beauty of its patina finish - when cast, spelter is produced without defect - creates sculptural works of perfect form. The quality of the spelter lies in its casting. After the body of the work is cast, it can be painted or gilded. Thanks to this exact science of production, spelter has become as valuable as bronze because of the superior quality of its finish. The sculpture rests on a black veined marble base bearing the manufacturer's label "L C Marbrerie d'art, Saint Etienne". The bases are covered with felt. The pieces are overall in very good original vintage condition, with slight marks and signs of use on the pieces and bases (see photos and video). The bookends have only been gently cleaned to preserve the beautiful patina of time. No cracks or chips on the marble or the greyhounds.
