Mid-century Scandinavian teak coffee table by Illum Wikkelsø for Koefoed Hornslet, 1960s

This low coffee table was designed by Illum Wikkelsø for the Danish manufacturer Koefoed Hornslet during the 1960s. It is finished in teak wood in a natural color. It has two pull-out tops, due to which it reaches a length of 210 cm. One top is finished in teak wood, and the other with black formica. The base consists of legs with cut edges. Noteworthy is the beautiful detail in the form of a semi-circular joing the legs with the top. It proves the exceptional craftsmanship of the designer. The clear aesthetics and clean lines of the design are the essence of Scandinavian design. The table is signed with the number OL77. Kristian Illum Wikkelsø was part of a group of designers representing the golden age of Danish design in the 1950s and 1960s. He was one of the key creators who made the Danish style of design an international phenomenon. While Wikkelsø's style was in many ways in keeping with the design aesthetics of his time, he had the courage as well as the ability to develop his own innovative style, which was often expressive and surprising, but always focused on sublime craftsmanship and attention to detail. His goal was to capture the beauty of the surrounding environment in furniture designs. Wikkelsø was admitted to the Furniture Design School of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and, under the tutelage of Kaare Klint, made a name for himself with its unique aesthetics and craftsmanship of detail. He collaborated with several artists but eventually, in 1954, founded his own design company based in Aarhus, Denmark. The Koefoeds Hornslet factory was founded by Einar Koefoed in the 1920s. It was named after the town where it was located. The table is in original vintage condition. It has minor traces of age. Each of the extra panels has 30 cm. Reference : 263359
