This piece, in good condition, depicts a bronze figure holding the sundial in the manner of an atlas, holding the globe and thus raising it to the sky. The figure rests on a hand-carved stone pedestal or plinth, imitating to some extent the base of a classical column. Of French origin, it is of proportional size. An armillary dial is an object model containing a series of spherical rings. Before the development of metal clocks, watchmakers used this type of dial to determine the time, as it enabled them to know the position of the sun and other celestial bodies, and thus determine the time with reasonable accuracy. The armillary has a numerical band around the central perimeter of the sphere, making it possible to measure the time as the sun casts its shadow throughout the day.
