Early in his career, Kaufeld worked as a freelance designer, but was soon noticed for his talent and hired by a number of well-known German companies, such as Rosenthal and WMF.

During the 1960s and 1970s, Kaufeld designed many innovative products for WMF, including stainless steel cutlery, porcelain dishes, vases and lighting fixtures. His designs were often characterized by an elegant, minimalist aesthetic, with particular attention to detail.

Over the years, Kaufeld has won numerous awards for his work, including the prestigious Stiftung Industrieform German Design Prize in 1972. His contribution to the history of German industrial design is considerable, and his creations are still highly sought-after by collectors and design enthusiasts today.
