Mortier began his career working for furniture design and production companies such as Steiner, Cinna and Airborne. He also worked for household appliance manufacturers such as Moulinex and Rowenta.

Over the years, Mortier created many elegant and functional pieces of furniture, including the Venus chair (1955) for Steiner, the Transat chair (1953) for Airborne and the Meteor chair (1956) for Steiner. He also designed lighting fixtures, furnishing textiles and decorative accessories.

In addition to his work as an industrial designer, Mortier taught design at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and was President of the Institut National des Arts Décoratifs. In 1969, he was named Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur.

Today, Michel Mortier's creations are considered classics of modern French design, and are exhibited in numerous museums and art galleries around the world.
