After working for various companies, he was hired as chief designer by the furniture firm W. H. Evans in 1953, where he developed a range of modern, elegant furniture that won numerous awards. In 1958, he founded his own design company, Robert Heritage Designers, which also proved highly successful.

Over the course of his career, Heritage has worked for many British and international companies, including G-Plan, Ercol and Herman Miller. He designed furniture, lamps, office accessories and storage systems, among other products. His work was characterized by a modern, functional and elegant aesthetic, which proved very popular with the public.

Heritage was also heavily involved in the education and promotion of design. He taught at the Royal College of Art and was President of the Design and Industries Association. In 1974, he was appointed CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) for his services to design.

Robert Heritage is considered one of the most influential industrial designers of his time. His work continues to be sought after by collectors and design enthusiasts worldwide.
